Appen is a company which started out in 1996 in Sydney, Australia and is even registered on ASX since 2015. Apart from its Sydney headquarter; it also has an office in Washington, USA. It has a CEO and a permanent workforce and so is pretty much traceable by the official radar.

 Its clientele includes multiple governments around the world as well as Facebook, Twitter,Cisco, American Express and Google among others.

It is a data annotation company which basically crowd sources data for machine learning process which are fed into artificial intelligence systems to help them predict and simulate human behaviour.

That is to say in layman terms, it collects samples of human interaction, for example, the images of cars , feeds them into artificial intelligence so that it may be able to identify a car from other objects through simulated learning to slowly achieve a desirable level of accuracy. This might help it in say, if the AI wishes to achieve human free driving experiences.

However, it is to be noted that the freelancing assignments that Appen outsources does not qualify the contributors called contractors as employees of the company. Hence it cannot be treated as a conventional employer-employee relation. Having said that, Appen has been celebrated as the best job company for remote jobs in 2020 by Flexjobs.

After they login in, the contractors have to mostly undergo a selection and training process before they qualify to receive work assignments from Appen.

There is no formal qualification required to be part of Appen. Good language skills and working knowledge of computer programmes/social media is an on job requirement. However you need to have the basic service equipments ready with you before you login in search of assignments, these being:

• A computer with a sound card and speaker;
• A Smartphone not more than three years old and
• Decent internet connectivity.

However the examination to be undertaken for the selection process is a serious business and only if you qualify it ,will you become eligible for working with Appen.

Appen has a global workforce in more than 130 countries and more than 180 languages, so even thinking of dismissing it as a digital scam will be naive.
