Appen is the global leader in providing a data annotation platform for speech and search engine associated services. Appen provides to the respective champions in the arena of technology, healthcare, retail, automotive, and even government. They help them make informed decisions to enhance the efficacy of its AI-assisted products and Machine learning (MI) processes.
Appen, with its expertise diversifying across 130 countries and 180 plus languages has channelized a flexible data army of over 1 million. Appen has been instrumental in more than 13 billion judgments being made. This helped with 500,000 hours of audio data processing has resulted in providing groundbreaking accuracy to the artificial intelligence models including search engines, social media platforms, e-commerce sites, voice recognition systems, and sentiment analysis.
They weather the technological breakthroughs that engulf the millennium for more than twenty-odd years. The crowdsourcing of human interaction with the artificial intelligence assisted model provides ‘Training data’. This data ranges from text, images, audio, video to sensors which are labeled to allow the machine learning algorithms to optimize their analysis. For example, it allows for a targeted and personalized advertisements on social media platforms as well as improves customer services with the aid of virtual assistants and chatbots.
HISTORY
Appen was actually founded by linguist Dr. Julie Vonwiller and her husband Chris Vonwiller in 1996, in Sydney. Near which it’s present headquarter is situated in Chatswood in Australia while the USA headquarter finds itself in Washington.
ACQUISITIONS AND MERGERS
As Appen seekS to expand its horizon, it merged with Butler Hill Group in 2011. Acquired Wikman Remer in 2012, and a UK based transcription company MMG in 2016. It also went public on ASX in January,2015.
However, the acquisition of Leapforce in 2017 catapulted it to the top of its league with a million-strong flexible workforce. Also, the acquisition of Figure Eight in 2019 further cemented its position. Figure Eight had clients of the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Cisco Systems, Google and American Express.
GLOBAL JOB OPPORTUNITIES
The company has created many jobs globally and has been the best company for remote jobs in 2020 by Flexjobs. Specializing in Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), Annotation, Transcription, Spam detection, Translation, Localization, and Data Collection. Its workforce delivers at a rate 20 times faster at half the cost. However its remote jobs do not require a specialized skill set, nor set- in- concrete online timings. A computer setup, good speed internet, and due diligence and work ethics, and you are ready to roll.
The part-time job opportunities, which require you to work a flexible five hours to forty hours a week routine include an opportunity to work on projects or perform micro-tasks or aid in data collections and surveys. They may include tasks such as Categorizing social media, transcribing audio, clicking pictures according to provided inputs, moderating content, or simply drawing boxes on images. The ‘microtasks’ are finished in a short time of 15 minutes. Others may require you to have certain linguistic specialties and may warrant long term commitment if you are selected into Projects for say, search media evaluation where you get to work with the best search engines around the globe or social media evaluation, where you provide a helping hand to improve social media around the world.
APPEN PROJECTS
Appen is fond of naming its projects after geographical locations, animals, and rivers. The projects include Project Arrow Butler and Project Atascadero which aims at improving smart home technology and requires linguistic proficiency. Arrow Photo task project to improve the quality of images in Google photos; Calawah project for cardinal spelling correction; Uolo project which is to research and evaluate claims in various pieces; Yukon project which is a Google search evaluation project. The pay rates usually do not vary from project to project. Appen does not disclose complete information about its ongoing projects so it is hard to zero down to the exact number of projects operating at a time.
While many tasks in Appen operate at an instant ready-to-start basis, to work in a project requires you to pass an online test before they offer you participation in the project. A person can retake the test only once.
APPEN PAY RATES
All these carefully distributed ‘microtasks’ compiled together nudge Artificial intelligence into a world of further excellence. The company usually pays on an hourly basis and varying with the origin country of the contributor. However, it prides itself on paying more than the minimum wage of the origin country and providing decent reimbursement for labor in line with the simplistic nature of the work.
The hourly pay varies from profile to profile. A researcher can reasonably expect a paycheque for $9 per hour and a data collector can expect $30 per hour. However, the pay rates differ from country to country. The job of an Internet Analysts with Appen includes search engine evaluator or social media evaluator. These are also called rater jobs. The old raters in India are still paid @7 per hour but the new recruits can now expect to be paid $3 per hour. Appen uses Payoneer for the majority of its payment.
Appen has a global workforce that provided 24×7 services on most portfolios, they have delivered more than 6000 Machine Learning projects to date. As the internet and artificial intelligence slowly spread roots in most of the mundane human works, the scope of its endeavors is shooting through the roof and additional human intelligence is always welcomed on board to team up with the machine learning processes to provide for cutting edge models inaccuracy.
